Early Identification of Cerebral Palsy: How Early Involvement with Pediatric Rehabilitation Benefits the Family, Child, Team
Description: Cerebral Palsy is the most common physical or motor developmental disability of childhood. The identification and diagnosis of cerebral palsy is important so that treatment is initiated early and to encourage families to become active participants in a life-long process of rehabilitation. In addition, there are increasing numbers of interventions that impact neuroplasticity. Providing interventions at a younger age have the potential to impact outcomes for the child, the parents and ultimately the adult with cerebral palsy.
This webinar will review the epidemiology of cerebral palsy and provide the international guidelines and practices for early identification of cerebral palsy. The current goals of identification will be discussed. The clinician will acquire the knowledge of best testing and how to enact an early evaluation and diagnosis of cerebral palsy through the combined use of the Hammersmith neurological examination with other testing.
Early intervention and the principles of early involvement with rehabilitation will be stressed within the context of the international classification of function.
