On Nov. 22, Leora Cherney, PhD, SLP, scientific chair, Think + Speak Lab, received the Honors of the Association at the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association’s (ASHA) Convention in Orlando, Fla.
Honors of the Association is ASHA’s most prestigious lifetime achievement award, recognizing members for their distinguished contributions to the discipline of communication sciences and disorders.
According to Alex Johnson, PhD, provost and vice president at MGH Institute of Health Professions — and past president of ASHA — Dr. Cherney’s work “blends science, patient needs and the real clinical world. This ‘sweet spot’ is also the most challenging and few scholars have the stamina to focus in this convergent space. [Dr. Cherney] has demonstrated remarkable talent in her clinical research activities and her contributions have methodically moved aphasiology forward. We are all better for her work.”
In the ceremony, ASHA referenced Dr. Cherney's outstanding professional accomplishments:
- For more than 35 years, her influential career has melded research, interdisciplinary clinical practice, and teaching and mentoring — and altered treatment for aphasia and other neurogenic communication disorders.
- She founded and directs the Center for Aphasia Research and Treatment, which offers the specialized Intensive Comprehensive Aphasia Program and weekly aphasia community groups.
- She has published five books, 14 book chapters, 75 peer-reviewed scholarly articles, three aphasia treatment software programs and a self-report assessment for aphasia.
- Since 2000, she has given more than 85 invited presentations around the world and 127 peer-reviewed
