Burn Rehabilitation: Perspectives on Care

DESCRIPTION
This interprofessional course will explore the unique and complex rehabilitation process for individuals who have sustained burn injuries. Topics covered in this course include wound management and care across levels of care, the different types of burns, healing properties of skin and potential complications from burn injuries. Participants will learn strategies for improving mobility and functional independence as well as how to provide psychosocial support to promote holistic recovery. The course emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration among healthcare professionals, that can enable patients to return to participation in all areas of life more quickly. Upon completion of this course, you will be equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to provide comprehensive burn care and promote the physical, psychological and social recovery of your patients.

AUDIENCE
Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Occupational Therapy Assistants, Orthotists, Physical Therapists, Physical Therapist Assistants and Speech-Language Pathologists
SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION
Participants are required to complete a total of 12 hours of coursework, including four pre-recorded online lectures, three live, online sessions and one hour of self-study work. The live, online sessions will provide participants with the opportunity to interact with instructors and other participants in real time. The sessions will be recorded and made available on-demand for those who are unable to attend live. Participants will also be required to complete self-reflection assessments and a post-course survey to receive credit for the course. All coursework must be completed by April 2, 2025, to earn
full credit.
LEARNER OUTCOMES
Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:
- Summarize the prevalence and types of burns and the role of rehabilitation in burn management
- Discuss Clinical Practice Guidelines (CPG) or available clinical evidence relevant to individualized practice for healthcare professionals responsible for burn
survivor rehabilitation - Describe the elements of a detailed skin assessment and what to consider in developing a treatment plan
- Develop a plan for the education of patients regarding long-term effects of burn scarring on the skin
- Analyze treatment interventions and orthotics utilized by the interprofessional burn management team to address hand and facial deformities, mobility and lower extremity impairments because of burn injury
- Define the responsibilities of each member of the interprofessional burn management team in managing pain for patients with burns, including commonly employed medications and other pain management techniques
- Recognize the psychosocial implications of burn injuries and strategies to help individuals with burns within this domain
- Describe the roles and responsibilities in assisting an individual to reintegrate into the community after a burn injury
