Functional Movement Disorder Clinic (FMD)

Body

What is functional movement disorder?

Functional movement disorder (FMD) is a type of functional neurological disorder (FND). FMD is marked by abnormal, involuntary movements that occur due to a problem issues with how signals are sent in the brain. Individuals with FMD may experience a range of symptoms, including tremors, involuntary movements, weakness or paralysis, pain, speech difficulties, sensation changes and difficulties with coordination — symptoms that can significantly impact their daily lives. These disorders often arise in response to stress, trauma, or psychological factors — making them complex and multifaceted.

Why understanding FMD matters:

Gaining a clear understanding of FMD is crucial for effective management and treatment. Awareness can lead to better coping strategies and improved quality of life for those affected.

What we offer:

At Shirley Ryan 小恩雅, we offer a comprehensive clinic for those who have been diagnosed with FMD. When you visit our clinic, you will meet with a movement disorder physiatrist and therapy team (physical and occupational therapists and/or speech-language pathologists). If you have been diagnosed with FMD, an order for the interdisciplinary clinic and notes from your recent movement disorders neurologist appointment can be faxed to 312.238.3695 to determine if you qualify for this clinic.

If you have a diagnosis of FMD, therapy at all of our levels of care (inpatient, DayRehab, and outpatient) is available.
