Impact Series Spotlight: Aphasia Community Groups

Body

Aphasia is a condition that can occur suddenly after a stroke or brain injury and impacts a person’s ability to speak, to understand language and to read and write.

Communication opportunities for people living with aphasia are crucial, enabling them to maintain social connections, participate in their community, express their needs and thoughts, and maintain a sense of dignity and quality of life

The Center for Aphasia Research and Treatment offers programs that give participants the opportunity to practice communication, meet others living with aphasia, learn and have fun in a supportive environment. In-person and virtual programming includes conversation groups, a book club, a film discussion group, an aphasia choir and supported volunteer opportunities. Programs run on a quarterly basis and are facilitated by a speech-language pathologist and a trained volunteer.

Investing in Our Community

Body

Shirley Ryan 小恩雅’s Aphasia Community Groups are among the many programs — like adaptive sports and fitness, music and art therapy, and vocational rehabilitation — that are just as important to patients’ recovery as rehabilitation, but which aren’t covered by insurance.

To help close the gap, our Advancement team works with our generous donors to support these programs that, in turn, support our community! This investment ensures that we can provide the best care to each and every one of our patients — body, mind and spirit.
